It's all about the link between water and climate change.
The main objective of this internationally recognised day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: Water and sanitation for everyone by 2030.
And we wanted to share with you the UN key messages on this topic.
Society needs to remind policy makers to put water at the centre of the climate change action plans.
Water is one of the most precious resources on the planet but more than 1 billion people lack access to fresh drinking water. Water security is also now identified as being one of our main global challenges and is directly linked to food, energy and climate change.
Our behaviours are affecting the water cycle. We use it for irrigating crops, for manufacturing, for drinking, and for many more domestic uses in our daily lives. All these uses mean that we are now facing many challenges, such as, water scarcity, flooding, droughts, water pollution, and a lack of access to fresh water. In the world today only 0.75 % of the total amount of water on our planet is clean and safe to use. Changes in weather patterns are also melting our glaciers, with devastating effects on our ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. Plastic pollution in our oceans is a major threat to our marine life and our own health. An astonishing 8 million metric tons ends up there each year. Water is vital for us and for our planet and we need to act now to preserve it.
New alternative solutions already exist and can help that sustainable migration
There are already optimal solutions for some of the water management challenges we face but more can be done. We are seeing how over the past few weeks some rivers and canals are cleaner than ever before, with less pollution and with renewed marine life. The canals of Venice for example have never been so crystal clear, just because we have reduced and stopped our daily habits.
Every one of us in our daily lives can implement a few small habits that can have a big impact.
We need to be more conscious about water in our life, and change our habits and behaviours in order to free it from pollution. We can start by reducing the amount of water bottles we consume each day and switch to refill and reuse instead of recycle. By a simple change to our habits we can make a big difference for everyone and our planet. Our mission at Closca is to inspire a change in social behaviour, to create caring communities for a better, cleaner and greener world for us all.
